Glimpses of God

Tuesday of the first week of Advent: Today's Readings

Henri Nouwen once wrote, "My deepest vocation is to be a witness to the glimpses of God I have been allowed to catch."

I imagine driving down a tree-lined road on a sunny day. As the sun dances through the trees, occasionally it catches in my eyes. Those are glimpses of God, those moments when I'm blinded by beauty, overwhelmed by light and filled with peace. Sometimes these moments are as simple as an afternoon drive. Other times, they are as profound as welcoming a new child into our family.

We've all been fortunate enough to catch glimpses of God in some form or another. But I can easily slip into jealousy, watching others get blessed with the miracle that I've prayed for. At the same time, I wonder how many times I've been blessed with something someone else desires.

Jesus' reminds his disciples, "Many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it." Today, let us pray that we can be open and aware of the experiences that God allows us to have of him and reflect on the question: "What has God allowed you to see?"
